One for the Thumb - Go Steelers!

Way to go Steelers!!! The Pittsburgh Steelers finally got one for the thumb as they beat Seattle’s Seahawks at 21-10 to secure their fifth Super Bowl ring. Five Super Bowl championship titles in 32 years, and I actually got to witness this amazing victory! Wow, what are the odds… I can’t believe it! This was the first SuperBowl match mm and I watched and cheered. We are so beginning to like the game, sadly only in our fourth year here.

I did some research and found out that Steelers was really first known as the Pirates. The team only changed its nickname to Steelers in 1940. In one of the most famous streaks in all of sports, the Steelers dominated the NFL during the 1970s. In those golden years, Pittsburgh advanced to the playoffs eight straight seasons and won four Super Bowl championships in a six-year span. They were the only team then to win back-to-back Super Bowls twice. But since their last Super Bowl championship in 1979, their performance lacked the lustre they displayed in those ‘dynasty years’.

This is the year of the Dog (according to the lunar calendar), but I would certainly re-qualify that as the year of the Underdog. The Steelers entered the playoffs as a super underdog, a sixth seed that no one would have expected to match up against the mammoth Colts. Much less pitting against the top seed Seahawks. Still, they pulled it off, admittedly with quite a bit of luck on their side. Come to think of it, I really love watching the underdogs. It feels so exciting and intoxicatingly good to see one perform against the masses’ expectation. One reason why World Cup 2002 was so interesting then….

I think this game had quite a few interesting highlights. Obviously there were, since Wenzheng lost his voice and Zijian kept hitting the miniature Coach Cowher’s head like it’s going to make them hit a touchdown! -lol- Willie Parker broke through the defense together with a record 75-yard touchdown run. Despite his inconsistent throws and a disastrous pass which resulted in an interception, Ben Roethlisberger entertained me with his numerous quarterback sneaks. My favorite was one of the numerous trickery the Steelers displayed on the field - versatile wideout Antwaan Randle El took a handoff from Parker, sprinted right and threw perfectly to Ward for a 43-yard TD with 9:04 remaining.

The fame and glory is here to stay. Three cheers for Coach Cowher and his team! All these would have been a tad more perfect if CMU had declared this Monday a holiday… hah!
